Inequality Measurement with Subgroup Decomposability and Level-Sensitivity
نویسنده
چکیده
Subgroup Decomposability is a very useful property in an inequality measure, and level-sensitivity, which requires a given level of inequality to acquire a greater significance the poorer a population is, is a distributionally appealing axiom for an inequality index to satisfy. In this paper, which is largely in the nature of a recollection of important results on the characterization of subgroup decomposable inequality measures, the mutual compatibility of subgroup decomposability and level-sensitivity is examined, with specific reference to a classification of inequality measures into relative, absolute, centrist, and unit-consistent types. Arguably, the most appealing combination of properties for a symmetric, continuous, normalized, transfer-preferring and replication-invariant (S-C-N-T-R) inequality measure to satisfy is that of subgroup decomposability, centrism, unit-consistency and level-sensitivity. The existence of such an inequality index is (as far as this author is aware) yet to be established. However, it can be shown, as is done in this paper, that there does exist an S-C-NT-R measure satisfying the (plausibly) next-best combination of properties – those of decomposability, centrism, unit-consistency and level-neutrality. Path Independent Inequality Measures
This paper explores a natural decomposition property motivated by Shorrocks (1980, Econometrica 48, 613 625) and Anand (1983, ``Inequality and poverty in Malaysia,'' Oxford University Press) that we call path independent decomposability. Between-group inequality is found by applying the inequality measure to the smoothed distribution, which replaces each income in a subgroup with its representa...
متن کاملInequality decomposition by population subgroups for ordinal data.
We present a class of decomposable inequality indices for ordinal data (e.g. self-reported health survey). It is characterized by well-known inequality axioms (e.g. scale invariance) and a decomposability axiom which states that an index can be represented as a function of inequality values in subgroups and subgroup sizes. The only decomposable indices are strictly monotonic transformations of ...
متن کاملIncorporating concepts of inequality and inequity into health benefits analysis
BACKGROUND Although environmental policy decisions are often based in part on both risk assessment information and environmental justice concerns, formalized approaches for addressing inequality or inequity when estimating the health benefits of pollution control have been lacking. Inequality indicators that fulfill basic axioms and agree with relevant definitions and concepts in health benefit...
متن کاملPATH INDEPENDENT MULTIPLICATIVELY DECOMPOSABLE INEQUALITY MEASURES Ma CASILDA LASSO DE LA VEGA
Foster and Shneyerov (2000) explore an additive decomposition property for inequality measures that they call path independent decomposition. They characterise the class of measures that have this property. Taking their results as a reference, we seek here to generalise the notion of decomposability, and to characterise inequality measures that admit path independent multiplicative decompositio...
متن کاملA Report on Mexican Multidimensional Poverty Measurement
This report addresses the challenges arising from a change in Mexico’s official poverty methodology from an income-only basis to a multidimensional basis that includes education, access to health services, access to social security, shelter characteristics, access to basic services, access to food, and level of social cohesion. The concept of poverty underlying this report is drawn from Amartya...
